Mountain Adventures - Avalanche Courses
Canadian Avalanche Association recreational level courses for skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, and all backcountry travelers.
Learn the basics of recognizing unstable snow and avalanche terrain, and assessing avalanche danger.
We follow the Canadian Avalanche Association course outlines and a manual is included for your personal use.
Upon completion of this 16 hour course you will receive a certificate of attendance.
The Recreational Avalanche Course program offers two levels of training, introductory and advanced. The course outlines have been developed to meet the needs of the recreational user and provide a framework for course providers ensuring that the minimum required material is covered. The course provider can adapt the course materials to meet the needs of the course participants. Specific lessons designed for the snowmobile community are included to adapt the program for snowmobile groups. The course outlines are contained in an instructor manual which includes specific lesson plans, field session objectives, information on instructional techniques, resource forms and a bibliography. In addition to the instructor manual, a student manual, overhead transparencies, and a 35mm slide set have been developed to be used in conjunction with the lesson plans.
Providers using this material must meet minimum standards and sign a user-agreement. These materials help with presenting organized and professional courses. Instructors with technical knowledge, practical experience, and appropriate qualifications are the key to providing the best possible course to the public.
The instructor for the course, Daniel Griffith, is a member of the Canadian Association of Mountain Guides, The UIAGM (International Guides Association), and a Professional member of the Canadian Avalanche Association. He has worked in the avalanche industry for 25 years in avalanche control , helicopter and cat skiing guiding, and consulting for ski areas and forestry operations. His well rounded experience provides a wealth of knowledge to share with students.
